I CAN DO THAT

Variable Space in Wicker Park was packed for the I CAN DO THAT opening event Friday night, an energized mix of art makers and art lookers and art lookers who became art makers thanks to the participatory nature of the show. While some of the participation seemed to dissolve into silliness, there were some interesting things going on there, too.

I found a 5x7" pen and ink drawing with the sign "copy me" on it – how could I resist THAT? I didn't, and here is a photo of the original original by Jared Haberman and my copy of it:

I had offered up a typewriter for participants to write artist's statements on, hoping it would make people think about just how it is the medium affects the message (of course my attempt to direct people's thoughts was lost in the ether, as is appropriate:
